 El Cajon Animal Shelter
1275 N. Marshall Avenue, El Cajon, CA 92020
 Phone: (619)441-1580

The shelter is open to the public from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday and from 1pm-2pm for lunch. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday.

The El Cajon Animal Shelter houses stray or relinquished pets found within the city limits of El Cajon and La Mesa only. Animals not claimed by their owners are placed up for adoption to the general public.

The El Cajon Animal Shelter is not a part of the San Diego County Animal Services.

Did you know that the El Cajon Animal Shelter has one of the highest number of pet adoptions in San Diego County? Our shelter was built in 1957 and never designed to house cats. New kennels and an office were added in 1971, but the facility is sorely inadequate in spite of it's astonishing adoption rate of nearly 2,800 animals a year.

Many residents learned more about the El Cajon Animal Shelter during Fire Storm 2003 when it provided shelter to over 250 displaced and lost pets.  The shelter cared for goats, donkeys, dogs, cats, reptiles and hybrid wolves for up to three months with no extra staffing. These animal accomodations were provided to pet owners at no cost thanks to generous public donations.  During the recent 2007 fires, over 175 animals found shelter as the staff kept the facility open 24 hours the entire week.

Proposition 'O' will help build a badly needed new facility for the animals of El Cajon and La Mesa.   Even with the best planning, construction costs are sky-rocketing internationally, therefore more funds are needed for additional construction costs and for educational programs not funded by the City of El Cajon.  You can find a list of these needs on the donation opportunities page of this web site.

The El Cajon Animal Shelter has an ever changing population of cats, dogs and rabbits.  You might be surprised to see a variety of mixed breeds as well as pure breeds.  Click on the following link to see the most current pets waiting for a loving home:http://www.1-800-save-a-pet.com/shelter69341-pets.html

The current team of staff and volunteers at the Shelter are extremely dedicated and caring.

Cindy, Animal Control Officer;  Jessie Lou, customer service; Lorraine, animal care attendant and office assistant; Byron, Animal Control Officer; Diane, animal care attendant; Danuta, animal care attendant.

Diane is the first person hired as an animal care attendant and considered the backbone of the shelter.  She manages and maintains the supplies, pet food and volunteer scheduling.  You can find Diane involved in every aspect of the day to day operation of the shelter... with a smile.

Danuta is an animal care attendant who medicates, feeds, cleans, exercises and conducts evaluations and personality profiles on the animals to facilitate successful adoptions.  She treats all the animals as if they were her own personal pets.

The shelter's 'Cat Kingdom' is a temporary home to this kitty looking for a new permanent home soon.

Don't forget the bunnies and other small animals which can be adopted at the shelter too!
